Guardian article

With the recent announcement of the imminent demise of The Dandy, in print form at least, the British newspapers have come over a bit nostalgic about the British comics industry, which mostly died out several decades ago. The one about girls' comics in The Guardian is nice, though, and appears to be by someone who actually read the classic IPC triumvirate of Misty, Tammy, and Jinty.

iComics

Egmont, the current owners of Tammy, have made a tentative foray into digital comics, which may make my own effort superfluous. So far they've only released Roy of the Rovers through iTunes, but there's some indication that they intend to follow this up with more of their vast back catalogue.

That's the good part. The bad part is that they are a bit pricey. £1.99 for a 'volume' of 26 pages, or what I like to call an 'issue'. I have no idea of the quality, but when I'm getting original comics for less than that, I consider that a bit high.

Update: It appears that there is a one off special of Misty coming our way in digital form in the not too distant future, presumably with different contents from the last Misty special, but no Tammy on the horizon yet.

Once upon a time...

A long time ago when there was such a thing as a British comics industry I used to read a comic called Tammy. It's been thirty years since it was published, but none of the stories from Tammy have ever been collected or reprinted.

Now I'm trying to rediscover the experience, and perhaps share it with others, as I attempt to track down copies of the comic and scan them to build up a digital archive so they will not be lost to the world. This blog was created to chronicle this search, and what happens along the way.

Tammy was published by IPC in London from 1971 to 1984, and ran for 689 issues, so it could take a while...
